They had a very quiet 9-7 season, most teams would be happy to have that record in the NFL. The Giants weren’t though, they ended the season proudly, but they were dismantled by the Falcons before that and were knocked out of the playoffs ultimately before the last game of the season even happened. Their weakness in 2012 was their atrocious defense. Their offense was not nearly as powerful as it was before with injuries all over the field that left Cruz as the #1, although he needs Nicks to take off the pressure. I mean what did we expect, a repeat?
Another Entry to the DT Merry Go Round?
Cullen Jenkins [DT] – Previously with PHI / CLE / GB
Jenkins heads to New York as an aged veteran at the age of 32. Will he make the mark that they have been needed in the middle of the defense? He seems to still have some juice left, he should have something to prove after being apart of the “Dream Team” and not meeting those expectations. I am just worried he could end up like Chris Canty or Shaun Rogers did with the G-Men, as a wasteful body on the roster. He should make an impact though and break through their recent mishaps.
Why not bring another Eagle DT?
Mike Patterson [DT] – Previously with PHI
He hasn’t played a game since 2011 when he suffered seizures before the season, yet he made it through the season. He ended up getting placed on IR in 2012 though. Patterson hits 30 in 2013 and is coming of an injury shortened season. Hopefully he can bounce back and help the Giants fortify their front four. They need to improve their rush defense, which will then help the pass defense. Patterson is a risky signing, only time will tell whether they pulled the winning ticket.
The #3 WR and Insurance for a Cruz Holdout
Louis Murphy [WR] – Previously with CAR / OAK
It’s a shame that Murphy played for Oakland, his career looked promising even after a rookie year where he was playing with horrible quarterbacks and outplayed the Oakland #1 pick that year, Darius Heyward-Bey. He vanished after that though, yet still would show glimpses of his rookie year sometimes. The Panthers saw his potential and then made a move for him, but couldn’t afford to keep him or really anybody on their team. He now replaces Domenick Hixon and will be the 3rd receiver in the offense. He could turn out to be a very good signing and deep threat for the Giants in 2013.
Brandon Myers [TE] – Previously with OAK
A product of the Greg Knapp offensive scheme and the many games were Oakland was just playing catch up. Myers has been with Oakland for more than a year and well he was always just a blocking tight end and Zach Miller’s back up. The Giants hopefully realize what they are getting, he will be utilized though. Martellus Bennett lit it up for the G-Men in 2012, Myers can fill that same role.
Welcome Back from your Vacation!
Aaron Ross [CB] – Previously with JAX / NYG
After he took his vacation from the NFL and signed with the Jaguars for a big contract. He now returns to the Giants, who realized that Terrell Thomas does not have knees able to withstand anything. It really is a shame. Ross is just as injury prone, but his speed gives the Giants some needed depth at the cornerback position.
Dan Connor [LB] – Previously with DAL / CAR
Connor has played sparingly in his NFL career due to injuries and just being seen as depth. He actually comes into a situation where he may be forced to start at middle linebacker, after the Giants lost Chase Blackburn. Look for Connor when the battle for the middle linebacker position begins this off-season.
Ryan Mundy [SS] – Previously with PIT
Mundy was just a depth move for the Giants, as he was just depth for the Steelers. He filled in for veteran Ryan Clark last season though. Hey, Stevie Brown was just “depth” and he had a spectacular season in 2012. You never know what might happen. Up to this point, Mundy has not been anything special though and only he can really do anything to prove us wrong.
A New Kicker in Town
Josh Brown [K] – Previously with CIN / NYJ / STL
Not sure where this came from, Lawrence Tynes seemed like he was doing just fine last year. Brown showed us that he wasn’t done for last year when he came back with the Bengals mid-season.
Victor Cruz [WR] – Hasn’t signed RFA Tender – Should get a new deal, but a hold is still a possibility
Keith Rivers [LB]
David Carr [QB]
Kevin Booth [G]
Stevie Brown [SS]
Jim Cordle [C]
Adrian Tracy [LB]
Andre Brown [RB]
Justin Trattou [DE]
Osi Umenyiora [DE] – Status: Signed with ATL
He finally gets his wish to leave. Atlanta is needed a true speed rusher, hopefully Osi can work alone.
Chase Blackburn [LB] – Status: Signed with CAR
Kenny Phillips [SS] – Status: Signed with PHI
A high draft pick, they felt that Stevie Brown may be a better investment for the team. In the end they let him walk, for more money most likely.
Rocky Bernard [DT] – Status: FA
Travis Beckum [TE] – Status: FA
Justin Tryon [CB] – Status: FA
They are letting him test the market, he may just come right back after it is all said and done.
Martellus Bennett [TE] – Status: Signed with CHI
This was easily their biggest loss, but they only had plans for him for a year. They didn’t realistically expect to see him play the way he did in 2012.
Ramses Barden [WR] – Status: FA
He is talking to the other team in New York. That would be an easy move for him.
Domenik Hixon [WR] – Status: Signed with CAR
Replacement for Murphy, as they traded off in free agency. He will fight for the #2 WR position in Carolina.
So the Giants didn’t make any huge moves, and really lost more than they gained up front. They make smart moves every year and a guy will emerge as a draft pick or just a cheap free agent. Look to the Giants to bounce back and not look so much like Eli Manning, before he was a 2-time Super Bowl Champion. Who do you think was the biggest transaction (add/loss) for the Giants this off-season?
